Hello Everyone!

I hope that you are doing well on this foggy day in Boston. I am looking forward to our discussion next week of Ninth Street Women. I have enjoyed learning more about Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler and the context in which they produced their work. Harvard Review has a good summary if you have not familiar with this book.

Please feel free to join next week even if you have not finished (or started) the book. Here are a few quicks links with some background information on these five artists.

Three things

Over not Under

I am so used to seeing lists that emphasize success under a certain age. I thought that it was refreshing to see a list that focused on the accomplishments of people over a certain age instead.

“In a moment when a global pandemic has pushed a disproportionate number of women out of the workforce—and forced hundreds of thousands into too-early retirements - it is our hope that the stories of the women on this list resonate, inform and inspire.”

Lighting Advocacy Letter

A group of us in Boston (Melissa Mattes, Reiko Kagawa, Josh Feinstein, Sara Schonour, Margie McNally and myself) have been working on a letter to manufactures advocating for greater transparency and increased sustainability in lighting products. The letter was inspired by the AIA material pledge. It focuses on human health, climate health, ecosystem health, social health and equity and the circular economy. I think it is fair to say that this has been a passion project for everyone involved. The letter is hosted on the mindful Material website, which uses the power of collective action to advocate for increased sustainability. My involvement with mM has shown me the power of the collective and the impact that a group supporting an idea can have, but I would also say that my time in book club has shown me this as well. I would love if you could take a minute to read the letter, and to consider having your firm sign on.

Something on Productivity

I found this podcast to be thought provoking, as I am certainly someone who tries hard to be productive, and I would say prides themselves on this. Is this a good thing? It is worthwhile to consider what the boundaries of this productivity might be. As things are starting to open up it is also interesting to think about what we are adding into our lives again, and how the need to feel productive might factor in to these choices.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing you next week!

Alexandra
