Hello BOSLadies, Tomorrow at 5:30pm EST is our May meeting! We will be discussing Daily Rituals: Women at Work by Mason Currey on Zoom. If you're experiencing Zoom fatigue, please feel free to turn off your camera and just listen in. And, of course, if you haven't read the book, don't let that keep you from attending! There is a reason why we were jokingly referred to as the Anything-But-the-Book Book Club (we don't often actually get around to talking about the book) so no stress, we aren't as strict as Lillian Hellman!

1. Something for Mother’s Day: On Friday, the IALD hosted a webinar called Work-Life Balance: Parenting in Lighting. Under stay at home orders, parenting looks a lot different these days and that translates into a significant work load increase for mothers who, as survey results revealed in the webinar showed, typically bear the brunt of the parenting workload. BOSLady was the first place that I ever was part of a discussion about being a mother in the design industry. It was one of our first meetings and I was totally taken aback by the honesty and detail in which motherhood was described, about physical exhaustion and mental fog in the early years and about the practicality of working part time while managing expectations about what realistically can and should be achieved. The panel on the webinar is three mothers (including Brittany) and one father. This isn’t a typical way to wish all of you BOSLady moms a happy Mother’s Day, but I think it’s a way to draw attention to to the work that moms always are doing, both professionally and personally. Thank you moms

2. Something about rethinking the way we work: As office teams have been forced to work remotely because of the coronavirus, there has been plenty of talk about what the long term effects could be for office culture moving forward. Businesses that previously denied that work could be efficiently done from home are now seeing evidence to the contrary. This could be a huge boon for working parents and for others who have long needed and requested things like flex time. The Art of Manliness podcast interviewed Celeste Headlee, author of Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving, and they discuss topics like how modern American work habits came about, how we might be paid by task rather than by the hour, and Parkinson's Law.

3. Something to explore from homeEnter the Reflected Portal and tour the gallery curated by Lucca Townsend. As shared by Kseniia: Sasaki has a gallery space that it updates at least once a quarter and this is an exhibition that was thwarted by COVID-19. Take some time to get lost in the art and read about the creators.

One last note - you may receive a slightly different version of this letter within the next 12 hours via TinyLetter. I set up a BOSLady account for the email subscription service but for whatever reason was flagged when I tried to send today's letter. So, if they review and decide the email is safe to send, I don't want you to think that it is spam or that I was hacked. Thank you for your understanding!
