Happy September BOSLady Book Club!

Quick reminder that we are not meeting tonight, but next Tuesday, September 10th. Summer is technically not over until the 23rd so we are taking advantage by moving our September meeting outdoors, blanket on the grass style. Exact location is still TBD. I will be out of town next Tuesday so look this week for an email with specifics on location and another point of contact for that night just in case!

With this past weekend bookending the commercial summer season, I got reflective in the way we tend to do whenever we experience a demarcation of any significant caliber. Maybe it’s the residue of all of those years when September meant “back to school”, but as the languid summer is ushered out by fall’s cool air, I feel motivated to start something new and get a fresh take. If there is a theme to this week’s links, it is change.

Something to debate This article is a reflection on how a move and career shift didn’t necessarily change the author’s life in the way she thought it would. She writes that “despite uprooting [her] life in pursuit of more and finding it”, she is “not sure the emotional tenor” of her life has really changed with it. The psychological concept of the hedonic treadmill is referenced to explain why no matter whether something fantastic or catastrophic occurs, we end up at the same emotional baseline we were at prior to the event. Is it encouraging to know that however awful things get, we’ll eventually be back to normal or is it disheartening to think that our long term happiness can’t be increased and that we’re essentially stagnant? There are plenty of arguments on both sides if you’re interested!

Something that will take 1:41 to watch From Fractal Film Co,. a quick ode to day dreamers.

Something reassuring to listen to Dorrie at Elkus introduced me to the author of Girl, Wash your Face Rachel Hollis and her podcast Rise. She has an episode about being successful while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s not your run of the mill work-life balance lecture, but more of what BOSLady has discussed in terms of setting boundaries and longevity.
